TEASER FADE IN: EXT. SPRINGS CHATEAU AND HEALTH RESORT - ESTABLISHING - DAY ONE 1 INT. ANDREW'S CLINIC - DAY ONE 2 ANDREW is at his desk, updating patient charts. He looks tired, pale and clammy -- obviously not feeling well, but trying very hard to deny it. He pauses a moment from his work, wipes his forehead and rolls his head back, trying to loosen the aches and pains he's feeling. He finds himself staring at the thermometer case on his desk. He hesitates a moment, then gives in and opens the case. He takes out the thermometer and places it in his mouth, but as soon as it's in: A KNOCK at the door breaks the silence. Andrew quickly removes the thermometer and shoves it back in the case. ANDREW Come in. He checks the clock on the wall and turns to the door as it opens. ANDREW You're early, Mr. Voss. I wasn't expecting you until -- Andrew stops short when he sees BRIAN stepping in, holding a large medical text. ANDREW (managing a smile) You're not Mr. Voss. BRIAN Hey, Dr. Cook. Brian notices how pale Andrew is and reacts with concern. BRIAN You all right? ANDREW I'm fine. Just a little tired. It's been a long week. Brian nods, then hands over the book. (CONTINUED) 2. CONTINUED: 2 BRIAN Ma asked me to bring this medical book back to you. Said thanks for lettin' her borrow it. ANDREW (taking the book) Sure. Anytime. BRIAN She woulda brought it back herself, 'cept she had to pick up Colleen at the train station. ANDREW Colleen's here? BRIAN For the weekend. She has to go back to school on Monday. ANDREW Well... I'll be sure to stop by after I'm finished here. BRIAN All right. See ya. Brian goes out. Andrew turns back to the thermometer case. He opens it, starts to reach for the thermometer... but then changes his mind and closes the case. ANDREW (to himself, a mantra) I'm fine. But clearly he's not, as we: CUT TO: EXT. STREET NEAR TRAIN STATION - DAY ONE 3 COLLEEN, dressed for travel, stands by the wagon with MIKE and SULLY, who listen as she excitedly describes her new classes at college: COLLEEN "An Introduction to Human Physiology" -- My first course in pre-medical studies. It's fascinatin'. MIKE That's wonderful, Colleen. (CONTINUED) 3. CONTINUED: 3 SULLY They givin' you a lotta work? COLLEEN We have an examination every Thursday. Gonna be a lotta memorizin'... (turns to Mike) But so far, most of the things we're learnin' I already know from workin' at the clinic with you. SULLY Helps havin' a doctor in the family. COLLEEN Yeah. Sully loads Colleen's suitcase into the wagon and climbs in. SULLY I'll see you back at the Homestead. COLLEEN See ya, Sully. Sully rides off as Mike and Colleen start down the street toward the clinic. COLLEEN The professor just gave us a new assignment. I'm really excited about it. MIKE What is it? COLLEEN We're supposed to interview a doctor and ask him what his most memorable case was, then write a paper describin' the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the case. (smiles) And since you're a doctor, I'm gonna make you the subject of my paper. Mike is visibly touched by this. MIKE I'd like that very much, Colleen. (CONTINUED) 4. CONTINUED: (2) 3 SULLY (to Mike) Now all you gotta do is figure out which case was your most memorable. Mike considers this a moment. It won't be easy. MIKE Which case... ANDREW (O.S.) Colleen! Mike and Colleen turn to see Andrew approaching, visibly ill and now having a difficult time hiding it. Colleen's eyes light up when she sees him... COLLEEN Andrew. (then, concerned) Are you all right? ANDREW I'm fine. Mike, also concerned, steps over and feels his forehead. MIKE You have a fever. ANDREW Slight. MIKE It's still a fever, Andrew. I'd like to examine you, to make sure. ANDREW Michaela, I'm a doctor. I think I'd be able to tell -- MIKE That you're pale and sweating and running a fever, which means you're sick... Andrew looks to Colleen, sees her concerned expression. MIKE Now please ... let me examine you. (CONTINUED) 5. CONTINUED: (3) 3 He then turns back to Mike and nods, conceding. As Mike and Colleen lead him to the clinic: FADE OUT. END OF TEASER 6. ACT ONE FADE IN: INT. CLINIC - DAY ONE 4 Mike finishes examining Andrew, listening to his breathing with her stethoscope. Colleen watches from nearby. ANDREW Some chills, minor muscle pains, headache... MIKE Headache? ANDREW The usual symptoms, Michaela. If you ask me, it's just a catarrh. Mike finishes, puts her stethoscope away. MIKE I agree... Andrew hops off the table, begins putting his coat back on. MIKE And the normal treatment for a catarrh is bed-rest. ANDREW Unfortunately, my duties at the hotel clinic won't allow that. MIKE As your doctor, I'm afraid I'd have to insist. Andrew pauses, giving her a look -- his doctor? MIKE If you don't rest, your body won't heal, and we wouldn't want this catarrh developing into something worse, would we? ANDREW (after a beat) No. We wouldn't. Mike takes his coat from him. (CONTINUED) 7. CONTINUED: 4 MIKE You can stay here, in one of the recovery rooms. That way we can monitor you, and make sure you get the rest you need. Andrew heaves a sigh of resignation and nods. INT. RECOVERY ROOM - DAY ONE 5 Andrew, now in bedclothes, settles into the bed as Colleen fluffs the pillows behind him, then pours him a glass of water. Colleen's just filled Andrew in on her assignment from college. ANDREW Most memorable case? COLLEEN Then we have to write a paper describin' the diagnosis, treatment and outcome. ANDREW Has Michaela decided which case that is? MIKE Not yet. She's gonna have to give it some thought. ANDREW I'm sure she's seen her share of memorable cases out here. COLLEEN Yeah. There's been a lot of them. (thinks a moment) Some really strange ones, too. ANDREW Really? Such as? COLLEEN Well... one time there was this man who everyone thought was dead. Only he wasn't. (off Andrew's confused look) See, first Jake found him in the barbershop... 8. +CLIP 1 - (207) - "HALLOWEEN" 6 Jake and Loren find Tom Poston dead in the barber chair. COLLEEN (V.O.) Mike performs an emergency tracheotomy on him, saving his life. COLLEEN (V.O.) Dr. Mike saved Chief Black Kettle's life. And to thank her, he gave her her Indian name... Black Kettle speaks, and Sully translates, telling Mike that her Cheyenne name is "Medicine Woman." Mike is moved by the tribute. +BACK TO SCENE 11 Andrew is also moved. ANDREW Medicine Woman. COLLEEN Yeah. Andrew thinks a moment. (CONTINUED) 10. CONTINUED: 11 ANDREW After five years, I would think Michaela's treated just about everyone in town by now. COLLEEN Pretty much... End with Preston running out of the clinic with only the sheet wrapped around him. 11. +BACK TO SCENE 15 Andrew laughs again, but then suddenly stops short, wincing in pain. Colleen sees this and reacts with concern. COLLEEN Andrew? What's wrong? ANDREW Nothing... it's nothing. COLLEEN Is your headache gettin' worse? He doesn't answer her, which tells her that the answer is yes. Colleen reaches over and feels his forehead, her concern suddenly increasing. COLLEEN You're burnin' up. ANDREW What...? COLLEEN (calling out) Ma! ANDREW It shouldn't be going up. I drank some of that willow bark tea. Mike comes in. Colleen turns to her. COLLEEN He's gettin' worse. Mike steps over to the bed, feels Andrew's forehead. MIKE Your fever's climbing. (turns to Colleen) Colleen, will you prepare some more tea? ANDREW How could it go up so fast? MIKE I don't know. (growing concern) I'm afraid this is something more than a simple catarrh. (CONTINUED) 12. CONTINUED: 15 Andrew reacts, looking worried now. MIKE Your spleen -- ANDREW Is enlarged, I know. Mike hands him the cup of tea. MIKE Here. Hopefully this will lower your fever and help with the pain. Andrew props himself up and drinks the tea slowly. ANDREW Where's Colleen? MIKE I asked her to ride out to Becky's to pick up Katie for me. Andrew nods. His worry and frustration showing. ANDREW I don't understand it. I thought perhaps it's influenza, but the symptoms presented themselves so rapidly... (CONTINUED) 13A. CONTINUED: 16 Mike sits back -- she's baffled as well. (CONTINUED) 14. CONTINUED: (2) 16 MIKE Well, the first thing we need to do is get your fever down. (re: the tea) Keep drinking. Andrew drinks some more, his apprehension growing. Mike sees this and tries to reassure him: MIKE I'm sure you'll be fine. Andrew nods, wanting to believe this, but still clearly worried. He tries to mask his anxiety by shifting the discussion away from him: ANDREW I guess you've had your share of mysterious illnesses recently. The outbreak here at the clinic... Mike nods. MIKE The malpractice case... (thinks a moment) There've been many more... +CLIP 6 - (203) - "SANCTUARY" 17 Dorothy is put in jail. MIKE (V.O.) COLLEEN (coming in) I took her home. Brian and Sully are watchin' her. Colleen looks back at Andrew, sees the obvious discomfort he's in. COLLEEN Is the tea helpin' any? Andrew shakes his head "no," then looks to Mike. ANDREW The pain's spreading... more distal now. Like athralgia. COLLEEN (to Mike) What's that? MIKE Pain in the joints. ANDREW Mostly in the wrists and ankles. (shakes his head) Strangest thing... MIKE Let's have a look. Mike reaches over and pulls the blanket back to examine his hands. (CONTINUED) 17. CONTINUED: (2) 22 ANDREW A rash? COLLEEN Measles? Mike shakes her head -- the mystery is now solved, but her concern continues to build. MIKE No. You have what's known as Spotted Fever. Sometimes called the "Black Measles." ANDREW I've never heard of it. MIKE It occurs mainly in the wilderness -- forested areas away from the larger cities. And most occurrences happen in the spring. COLLEEN How'd he get it? MIKE We're not quite sure of the cause... but some believe it's transmitted by the bite of a tick. Andrew reacts, puzzled. ANDREW A tick? COLLEEN Will he be all right? Mike looks back at Andrew -- she has to be honest with him. MIKE The rash will probably spread, and the pain and fever may increase. But you're young and strong. Hopefully, within a week it should pass, and you should recover. Andrew quiets a moment, reading the uncertain look on Mike's face. ANDREW But there's a chance I may not. (CONTINUED) 18. MIKE (leans close) I've given you an injection of morphine for the pain. We're monitoring your fever. It's leveled off, but if it goes up again, we'll give you an ice bath. Andrew manages a weak nod, and then he's out again. Colleen looks up at Mike. COLLEEN How long will he be like this? MIKE If there are no complications, the fever could break in a few days. COLLEEN Complications? Mike hesitates a beat, not knowing how to break this news to her gently: MIKE There's a chance of developing meningitis. I'll have to keep a close eye on him. Colleen looks back at Andrew, begins wiping his forehead with a cloth. Mike watches her a moment, then speaks: (CONTINUED) 20. CONTINUED: 23 MIKE It's getting late, Colleen. You should go home. Mike pulls a chair over and sits beside her. MIKE That's true. You never stop caring. (beat) But you must also never stop being a doctor. Colleen looks at her, confused by this. MIKE It's important to care, Colleen... but we must also try to maintain a professional detachment, to not become too emotionally involved with a patient.
